Cooksey began his career at Colchester United, but dropped out of the professional game and enjoyed a spell with Chesham United before then manager Billy Smith brought him to the Broadfield Stadium.
Despite being a complete unknown when he arrived at the club, home supporters quickly took Cooksey to their hearts with some impressive gutsy displays on the left-side of midfield.
Oldham manager Iain Dowie has signed the 23 year-old on an initial one-year contract, but has said that it will be increased to two if the player makes 20 appearances for his side.
