The Irishman hit a spectacular volley from outside the box which curled into the top corner to cancel out former Crawley striker Daryl Clare's 59th minute opener.

The strike extended the home side's unbeaten run to six games and virtually ended Burton's play-off hopes. The visitors should have gone ahead just after five minutes when striker Shaun Harrad picked up an under-hit back-pass by Chris Giles to run clear on goal.

He tried to round Phil Smith but the Crawley keeper read what he was going to do and saved at his feet.

Former Manchester City winger Scully then curled a free-kick over the wall and towards the top corner of the net only to be denied by Saul Deeney's full-length save.

Harrad wasted another golden opportunity for the Brewers just past the half-hour when he twisted past Giles but his low drive was well-saved.

The hosts almost broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time when Giles nodded Danny Brown's corner onto the crossbar and the ball was cleared to safety by covering defender Kris Taylor.

Burton took the lead on 59 minutes through Crawley old boy Clare. The former Boston United striker, who left the Broadfield Stadium last month after the players had their pay cut, beat the offside trap to latch onto a long ball from Taylor and drilled his shot under Smith.

Clare almost added a second soon after when he was sent clear following a mix-up in the home defence but Smith bravely smothered the effort.
