A goal in each half from the striker took his tally to five league goals this season, and was enough to help consolidate Dagenham's place in the top three of the Nationwide Conference.

The home side should have been out of sight as they swarmed all over Crawley in the opening exchanges and created four excellent chances in the first 15 minutes.

With just two minutes gone, Cliff Akurang rose in the box to head wide from a pinpoint cross from Scott Griffiths.

The home side were making all the early running and took a deserved lead when a long ball was met by Benson who was on hand to latch on to the lively Craig Mackail-Smith's flick-on.

Crawley manager John Hollins won't be happy with the way that defender Ben Judge was easily shrugged aside as Benson strode through to slot the ball past keeper Ben Hamer for his fourth goal of the season.

The home side should have increased their lead when Sam Saunders who was by now causing all sorts of problems for the visitors defence with his pace and trickery, crossed for Benson but his cross was just too high for the striker.

Crawley were being battered. They simply could not cope with the excellent link-up play between the Dagenham strikeforce of Benson and Mackail-Smith. The powerful Akurang and Dave Rainford were controlling the game in the centre of the park.

The Crawley strikers were getting no joy out of the home side defence which was being marshalled by the outstanding skipper Anwar Uddin.

Every time the ball went into the box Crawley looked like conceding and on 33 minutes a Danny Foster cross was met by the unmarked Benson, but his tame header was cleared by the Crawley defence.

The visitors fought their way back into the game and should have got back on level terms, when the Daggers keeper Tony Roberts spilled a deep cross which was fed back into the area by Danny Brown.

Jake Edwards headed onto the post from six yards out when it seemed easier to score. Then Ben Strevens follow up shot was blocked on the line by the impressive Uddin.

The home side hit back with a fierce drive from Rainford after 36 minutes, but his effort was parried by keeper Hamer.

Akurang again showed his strength when he powered into the box to meet Mackail-Smith's centre to head just wide.

The home side again picked up where they left off in the second half as they made all the openings.

Benson and Mackail-Smith again combined but this time they created an opening for full-back Foster who blazed over from just outside the box.

Crawley responded when a 57th minute corner was emphatically met by defender David Woozley, but his shot cannoned off the bar.

Minutes later, Strevens expertly met an outswinging corner but Griffiths was on hand to clear the ball off the line and into the grateful hands of keeper Roberts.

On 66 minutes a Sam Saunders corner was tamely punched by Hamer, Sam Sloma drilled the ball back into the box and Benson forced the ball home from two yards out for his fifth goal of the season.

By this time the home side were well on top and the Daggers strikers were tearing the Crawley defence apart.

Mackail-Smith should have scored twice in three minutes, when he first miscued from inside the six-yard box and then moments later he flashed his shot over when he should have tested the keeper.

By this time Mackail-Smith should have had a hat trick and on 84 minutes after yet more superb work down the left flank by Griffiths, his close-range effort was easily saved by Hamer.

With two minutes left Crawley were handed a lifeline when Woozley headed the ball back into the danger area from a right-wing cross for substitute Scott Rendell to head home from close range to make a nervy last few moments for the home side.
