The Lambs dropped into the relegation zone after their 0-0 draw with Crawley and Forest Green's victory over Stevenage.

But they could be handed a reprieve if the FA dismiss Altrincham's appeal against an 18-point penalty imposed by the Conference for fielding an ineligible player.

"I can't see what Altrincham's argument is," said dejected Tamworth manager Mark Cooper.

"They played an ineligible player and must lose the points, so I am expecting to still be in the Conference next season."

Tamworth knew victory over Crawley would guarantee safety and the Lambs did dominate the majority of the game.

But they have been blighted by a lack of goals all season and it was a familiar story at The Lamb.

Tamworth did not create many clear-cut chances and it was veteran striker Bob Taylor who had their best opportunities.

His first-half header from a corner was blocked on the line by strike partner Tris Whitman and he had a golden chance in the second half when the ball fell to him on the edge of the six-yard box but his shot was deflected wide.

It could have been worse for Tamworth had Crawley taken their chances. Jamie Cade had a superb volley that was deflected wide and, from the corner, Michael Bostwick headed the ball back into the six-yard box but Leo Mendy sliced his shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

"It was all set up for us to win but we just didn't have the quality to score the vital goal we needed," added Cooper.
