Red Devils down Gulls

Scott Davies' super strike set Crawley on their way to a 3-1 victory at Torquay as the Football League newcomers moved to the top of the table.

Dean Howell's free-kick rebounded off the Torquay wall and out to midfielder Davies. He flicked the ball up before letting fly with a thumping controlled volley from 25 yards out that gave home goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik no chance.

Olejnik then prevented Crawley going 2-0 ahead when he tipped Kyle McFadzean's bullet header onto the face of the crossbar following a Davies free-kick.

Crawley piled on the pressure and Torquay found it hard to get out of their own half and mount a serious challenge on the visitors' goal. Just before half-time central defender Charlie Wassmer powered home a second goal, with a thumping six-yard header to greet Davies' corner.

The Red Devils increased their advantage almost immediately from the kick-off, with skipper Josh Simpson heading home from Howell's cross.

United gained some consolation when skipper Lee Mansell scrambled in his fourth goal of the season after 50 minutes. The ball ricocheted around the Crawley area before crashing off Mansell and in. However any hopes of a revival were slim as Crawley stepped up a gear and Davies forced a brilliant 82nd-minute save from Olejnik.
